My kids use Camping Gear extensively

Posted by admin - September 13th, 2009

I have two sons both of whom are extremely adventurous.  They have gone on a number of school excursions to far away places and love the idea of visiting new places.  As I have been brought up in an army back ground, I have always ensured that my sons are outgoing and fun loving.  They carry Camping Gear whenever they go out on excursions with friends too.

We have always made it a point to visit many places during vacations.  I do not remember a single vacation when we all have spent at home.  We have travelled widely and seen many countries all over the world.  When I visited Switzerland last time, I was taken in by the beauty of the Alps and extended my stay thereat by a week.  The snow covered mountains were beautiful and I had a good view of them from my hotel room.  The travel by cable car and treading on the snow covered hills was an experience that words cannot describe!  If one wants to feel closer to nature, this is the place to visit.

Posted by admin - June 3rd, 2009

Outdoor enthusiasts need to invest in a good camp stove. There is nothing better than a hot breakfast in the woods first thing in the morning during a camping trip. Both individuals and families can use a camping stove, both on the trail and off. People enjoy taking a small portable stove on road trips and vacations, as well as camping trips.

Camp stoves are fueled by the use of small propane tanks that attach to the stove. With traditional style portable camp stoves, the person needs to buy a new canister every time the tank runs out. A high-quality propane tank will last about 40 minutes before running out. The other style of camping stove comes with an empty small tank, and it is up to the consumer to buy his own gas and refill it each time it empties. This type of stove usually runs on white gas. Use a Thermos to keep liquids warm

Posted by admin - May 25th, 2009

There are various things required in your gear when you embark on a nature trip. Ranging from tents, sleeping bags to food, everything is thought out and carried along. One item often neglected is a thermos to keep liquids warm during the trip. This is especially true if you are planning a trip during cooler climes and wish to keep warm on your trip.

I remember during one of my family trip with my parents we had surprised my dad by presenting him with warm coffee. He never expected it and was surprised and pleased and our simple steel based thermos had stored about five cups of coffee and kept it sizzling hot. Those who go camping are best advised to carry a thermos filled with hot or cold liquids as per their need. You never know when the weather changes bringing sudden rains and a dip in temperature. If you are out in the open during such weather, your thermos can become your life saver and keep you from freezing.

Choosing the appropriate camping tent for your family

Posted by admin - February 26th, 2009

It is understandable that the first and most important piece of your camping equipment while you are planning to go for camping is your family camping tent. Whether you are a seasoned tent camper or just getting started with your first family camping tent there are many things that you have to check before you decide to bye a camping tent such as the size, the quality, the performance and of course the price.

Whether you have a small family or large family, you have to check out the size of your camping tent. It mustn’t be very small and it mustn’t be very big. Concerning the quality, a camping tent must be strong with high performance features regardless the weather (i.e. windy or rainy weather). In addition be sure about the guarantee of the product. It is logical that a product with one year guarantee it is completely different from a product with three years guarantee. Finally, the price will play important role for your decision. It is better you make a market research. The key is to manage to bye the most appropriate tent for you with the lowest price you can find.

Different water purification methods used by campers

Posted by admin - January 26th, 2009

People who go camping pack their gear with care to ensure a safe and enjoyable time on their trip. They take care to pack all the essential items needed for survival in the wilderness. Some prefer to carry along their drinking water. But carrying bottled water is a big hardship, as even one liter of bottled water can cause excessive weight in the backpack. The best choice would be to use a water filter for purifying water.

But people use various methods of water purification – some prefer to boil water where they set their camp. But this method often proves to be cumbersome as you have to build a fire for boiling water and wait till it cools down so that it is suitable for consumption. Others use iodine tablets as they find it simple and easy to use. Iodine tablets will help to purify water, but they will not remove dirt or other impurities present in water. Iodine also leaves behind an aftertaste in the drinking water, so some do not prefer this method of water purification. It is best to get a water filter specially meant for people on the move.

Flashlights for Kids at Camp

Posted by admin - January 15th, 2009

If you are sending your child to camp this year, it is important to pack a flashlight for the trip.  There are many great flashlights on the market that are geared toward kids.  It is a good idea to do your homework before buying one so you can get the best deal for your money.

Depending on the age of your child and the type of activities they will be doing will determine what kind to buy.  If your child is young, a sturdy, well built flashlight that can withstand being dropped is a good choice.  Some even have automatic off buttons in case they leave it on.

If your child plans to go hiking or rock climbing, a head lamp style flashlight is a good choice.  These flashlights secure around the head and are hand free.  Many come with LED light bulbs that give great visibility. Child friendly flashlights can be purchased for a relatively cheap price.  Just make sure and remember fresh batteries before you send your little one off for a week in the outdoors.

Unique Flashlights of Today

Posted by admin - December 18th, 2008

They come in different shapes, sizes, colors, and styles. The everyday modern flashlight has transformed and now comes in whatever style needed for a particular task. Policemen carry the big heavy five pound flashlights, while Special Ops Teams utilize Night Vision goggles, each needed and intended for their specific job or duty.

Gold miners use flashlights attached to the top of their hard hats in order to have their hands free to excavate the treasure they seek. On that same note, somewhere out there is an older brother holding an ordinary flashlight close to his chin, while telling his younger brother a scary story. Flashlights have come to be an important commodity in our everyday lives.

Posted by admin - December 10th, 2008

People live a fast life in the cities, and so do not have time to pause and appreciate natural beauty. They live such a fast paced life that often they do not have quality time to spend with their families. At times weekends too are spent on work and parents rarely get to spend time with the elders and the children. Children often look forward to camping trips as they learn new things like setting up a tent, fishing etc and get in close contact with nature and have a blast exploring the countryside. Parents prefer family camping trips as there are no television sets, computers, video games and work pressures to disturb the tranquility. Late night camp fire stories are the most treasured by children and they look forward to this relaxing time where they get complete attention of their parents. You cook and eat fresh food, breath fresh and invigorating air and communicate with each other. Camping is the perfect way to strengthen family bonds and the perfect time which will be remembered by children with nostalgia when they grow up.

The eclectic history of the Catamaran

Posted by admin - November 7th, 2008

The odd Catamaran dates back to the 15th century, where the first recorded history of it was in 1697, in the southeastern coast of India. He described it as “two light logs, that carry but one man, whose legs are always in the water.” This odd contraption sparked the interest of this particular Englishmen, but more widespread interest would not be prevalent until nearly 200 years later.

American Nathanael Herreshoff developed his own version of the Catamaran in 1877, his new boats showed increased performance and better sailing quality than any that had come before him. After winning several races, the boat was banned from racing until the 1970′s. This type of boat remained largely unpopular, being considered, largely a novelty boat. It wasn’t until the late 1950′s that the boat became more seriously looked at, and valued for it’s ease of use and stability. The mid 20th century became a boon for these boats, as they became extremely popular for their own specific brand of racing, gaining in popularity until they reached their present state today. They continue, however, to be more popular in Europe than they do in the United States of America. And for the future of Catamarans? Only time can tell.

Choosing the Right Sized Tent

Posted by admin - November 5th, 2008

Choosing a tent that’s perfect for your camping needs is important.  Tents come in all sizes, shapes and colors.  There is no one tent that’s perfect for everyone. It all depends on where you’re camping, how much camping gear you’re bringing and what you want to get out of your camping experience.

For those who are camping for a long time, are camping with family or have a lot of camping or fishing gear, they’ll likely want to get a large tent. There are tents so large you can actually fit several cots in them as well as all of your gear.  These tents are perfect for a large gathering and for housing numerous people.  However, they can be cumbersome to get around.

Some people like a more intimate rustic feeling when they’re camping. Those types of people would likely want a smaller tent. Tents can come as small as pup tents, which only have room for one person in a sleeping bag.  This is prefect for the camper who wants to travel light and have a more organic camping experience.

How to plan a camping trip

Posted by admin - October 4th, 2008

If you are planning to go camping, ensure that you plan it well. If you are in a group then it is better and safe for you. Before embarking on your trip take care to include all the necessary items in your backpack. Essential items to be carried are a tent, sleeping bag, food, first-aid, torch and a mobile phone to contact people. Always paste the route you are planning to take and your destination on your refrigerator. This ensures that if you go missing, your family has some starting point to search for you.

You should also check with the ranger in the area where you are camping. If you are going in a group there are less chances of getting lost and being injured. Ensure that you have a durable tent with you. It is wise to invest money in a good quality tent as it is the only protection you will get in the faraway place where you have gone. Your tent should be sturdy enough to provide shelter against rain, cold wind and other such elements. Ensure to buy a good quality tent from a reputed brand which has been used by others.

What Is An All Weather Tent?

Posted by admin - September 22nd, 2008

Expert campers and outdoorsmen already know what an all weather tent is – most of them probably own one or two themselves. But the beginning camper might not know how to go about choosing the right tent – if an all weather tent isn’t necessary for their camping needs, they don’t have to spend the extra money. But it is important for beginners to know the differences the different types of tents, so they can pick the right one for their camping trip.

A good all weather tent is one that will protect you from all of the elements – cold weather, excessively hot weather, rain, sleet, snow – yes, believe it or not, some serious campers do pitch their tents in snowy climates or conditions! But many campers spend their time in the wild during the warmer months of the year, and try to avoid taking trips during the rainy seasons. If this is you, then you can probably stick with a more inexpensive tent. You will still have protection from any rain, though you’ll probably have to pack up your things if it starts to snow.

Choosing the Right Flashlight for Your Camping Trip

Posted by admin - September 13th, 2008

One of the most important tools you can bring along on a camping trip
is a flashlight, any veteran camper knows this. But with so many
different options available as far as flashlights are concerned, how
do you make sure you are getting the right one? Well, there are a
number of factors to consider when shopping for a flashlight,
depending on your tastes, your budget and of course your intended use.

For that once a year camping trip, a small, plastic flashlight that is
battery powered is sufficient. If you are an avid camper or
outdoorsman, however, you will want to consider something a little
more durable. If you really spend a lot of time camping, you may also
want to consider a hand crank flashlight or even a flashlight that
includes its own miniature solar panels for recharging. This can save
you quite a bit of money over the course of many trips throughout the
years. Often times these types of flashlights also include an AM radio
and an emergency siren of some kind.
