Saving Money When Hiking or Camping

At first glance, hiking does not seem to be a particularly expensive hobby.  After all, what are you really doing?  Wandering around in the woods.  A camera is nice, but hardly a necessity.  However, for anyone who intends to do any hiking on anything besides paved or graveled trails, there are a number of expenses involved, so the proper hiking or camping equipment is needed.

These expenses go up with the amount of time one intends to spend on the trail.  Although camping may help save money on a vacation since it is not necessary to find a hotel room or cabin to rent, it requires more equipment and more preparation, so you must know where to look for discount camping gear.

The first thing to consider when going any distance is clothing.  Boots are a necessity, and clothing that does not retain moisture is preferable.  Cheap camping equipment is available at most outdoor stores at the end of the season, and if you plan to take up hiking, they are good places to start purchasing your essentials.  This is also a good time for experienced hikers to replace or update their supplies.

The next thing to consider is equipment, including backpacks, water bottles, and first aid kits.  The type of backpack selected depends on the trip.  For a short trip, a small pack might work well enough provided that it has enough space for the amount of water you’ll need to carry, food, and a first aid kit.  Simple straps to keep all of the weight from settling on your shoulders will help make your trip more enjoyable.

For an overnight trip, however, a pack with a full frame and attachments for a tent and sleeping bag is preferable.  It may still be possible to find a pack that is not overly massive, but if you plan to be on the trail for more than a few hours, it is especially important to know how much water you expect to use and ensure that you have enough.  Provided that your trips are through areas where water is plentiful, carrying filters or water purification supplies allows you to purchase and use a smaller pack, saving weight.

Although there are name brand products for almost all camping supplies, there is also discount camping equipment available that may suit your needs just as well.  It is worth examining what your requirements are and not wasting the extra money just for a logo.  For example, do you really plan to camp somewhere where you need a sleeping bag rated to forty degrees below zero?  If not, you can save yourself several hundred dollars by buying one rated to only twenty degrees.

Hiking has more expenses involved than most people would think at first glance.  However, by examining your needs and looking at what type of discount camping gear is available, it is possible to have a good experience without breaking the bank.  This is true whether you plan to spend two hours or two weeks on the trail.
