What Makes a Good Tent?

Posted by admin - August 31st, 2009

Tents come in all sizes and price ranges. Most tents advertise how many people they will sleep, but this generally is a gross underestimate. It would be wise to buy a tent larger than the stated person-size, unless you are hiking into your campsite and need to economize on space.
Your tent needs to be easy to put up and take down. Lets face it; this may be the most important factor of all. Starting or ending your camping trip with the frustration of putting up and taking down a tent is a major drag. This is supposed to be vacation after all.

Tents come with the option of extra rooms, sunshades, and many windows. These are all nice options but you really don’t need to pay a lot of money for a fancy tent. Your tent should be guaranteed waterproof though!!  Make sure on this point.

Tents will all come with a rain tarp to put over your tent, plenty of pegs.  You will likely spend less time in your tent than you imagine. You may prefer to be able to stand up in your tent as well.   Just make sure your tent is durable and a good size for your needs.

We have to choose about the filling that sleeping bags are filled with. Synthetic fibers are the best in wet conditions, as they are good insulators. Tents come in all size and shapes .It might be sized for one person or for a family. If you are an avid camper, you understand the importance of a good quality sleeping bag.  A good quality sleeping bag can help you to get a good night’s rest and stay warm.  Some campers have opted to purchase expensive mattresses and blankets, but a good quality sleeping bag can replace both of those.

A fluffy down or down alternative sleeping bag can help you forget that you are roughing it.
It can keep you warm and comfortable, while sleeping outside under the stars.  It can also do the same even if you are sleeping in a tent.  If you’ve ever went camping and had trouble sleeping due to the hard ground or because you were cold; then consider getting a fluffy down or down alternative sleeping bag to end this problem forever.

Enjoy Your Walnuts

Posted by admin - August 9th, 2009

Do you like walnuts?  They are rich in beneficial fats.  Can a diet rich in Omega 3 fatty acids help our vision?  I found and interesting article (exerpt below) that discusses the positive nature of Omega 3 fatty acids when added to the diet of mice.  Now whether one study of mice is enough for us to add more Omega 3 to our diets is questionable.  However, there has been plenty of other research supporting many healthy benefits of Omega 3s.  So go ahead and have that Salmon - it is good for you.

The August 2009 issue of the American Journal of Pathology presents findings from a study conducted by the National Eye Institute in Bethesda, MD that examined the direct effect of omega-3 fatty acids on the prevention of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The scientists found that mice fed a diet high in omega-3 fatty acids had slower progression of the leisons in the eye and some improvement. They also found that the mice had lower levels of inflammatory molecules and higher levels of anti-inflammatory molecules, which they suggest may explain their findings.

Family camping essentials

Posted by admin - August 6th, 2009

Our family has been camping since I was six years old. Right before our family prepared to take its first trip my Dad decided to give each family member a piece of camping equipment. Each “piece of the camp” was necessary in order to complete the site and Dad thought giving everyone an essential piece would not only teach the kids responsibility but also help distribute the overall weight that we would have to carry out to the site.

Dad took charge of the tent, a triple room 6 person family sized unit with aluminum poles and a huge roof vent.  There was plenty of room for us to sleep comfortably and provided a sheltered area for eating. Mom looked after the sleeping bags and lanterns. Each of us got a rectangle closed-cell pad and a single sleeping bag to go on top. My brother got a brand new propane stove, three pots and a frying pan. The stove was green with a double burner and folded up into a neat square about the size of a backpack. I got a bright pink, all purpose, and multifunctional camping knife. It was the perfect size for me and served a variety of different functions. From cutting rope to scaling fish we caught from the lake, my knife served the family well during our annual trips.
