I went on a trip once where binoculars actually helped in an emergency. I was hiking up a mountain one nice fall day with one of my friends and we were about halfway up the mountain. My friend was jumping on some rocks through a stream and missed a step, he landed in between some rocks and his foot got twisted, he broke his ankle right there.

I thought that we must have gotten closer and so I took out my binoculars and I was able to look up higher on the mountain and see that there was actually another hut up the mountain a bit further. I was able to run up to there and we called in a helicopter who came and airlifted him to safety. If it weren’t for the binoculars he would have been without help for a very long time.
