I went on a trip once where binoculars actually helped in an emergency. I was hiking up a mountain one nice fall day with one of my friends and we were about halfway up the mountain. We were talking and having fun, neither of us really paying too much attention. My friend was jumping on some rocks through a stream and missed a step, he landed in between some rocks and his foot got twisted, he broke his ankle right there.
We thought that the closest shack was at the base of the mountain which would have taken hours to walk back to. I thought that we must have gotten closer and so I took out my binoculars and I was able to look up higher on the mountain and see that there was actually another hut up the mountain a bit further. I was able to run up to there and we called in a helicopter who came and airlifted him to safety. If it weren’t for the binoculars he would have been without help for a very long time.

When I was a kid growing up in Arizona, I belonged to the local chapter of Girl Scouts for several years. While I had fun going on a variety of outdoor excursions, and took great pride in the various badges I was able to earn, I had no idea the impact my Girl Scout training was going to have on future camping trips when I was older.
It’s amazing the instincts that kick in ten or even twenty years after the fact. Things like putting a bar of soap in the leg of recycled pantyhose and hanging it from a tree at camp, was a big hit when I was camping a few years ago with a group of “urban dwellers”. They thought my technique for keeping the soap dirt-free was simply genius, but I knew it was a simple Girl Scout trick. Stopping a fellow camper from turning over a rock with her hands, and showing her how to overturn it with her foot was another that I realized was merely instinct based on my Girl Scout Days.

When choosing your camping spot, it is important to consider the size of
your party, the view, and the relative proximity to community features,
but, if using a portable outdoor toilet, it is important to think about having
a bit of privacy whether in the form of foliage cover or having a branch to
hang a shelter on.
Popular portable outdoor toilet shelters will cost anywhere from $80 to $130 at many popular retailers, but often a tarp will work just as well. Some shelters are freestanding and set up is the same as tents while other shelters have a simpler shower curtain set up. Obviously, which type of shelter you have depends heavily on where you plan to camp, how much cover you will have, and how much you’re willing to pack into and out of your campsite.
Another thing to think about is what type of outdoor toilet you have. The more popular units have powder that turns all waste into gels while other units merely cover the basics. Price is obviously a factor when considering the shelter as well as the outdoor toilet itself. Common retailers stock the basic outdoor toilet for as low as $20 while the more sanitary outdoor toilets using the powder-to-get system go for upwards of $80.
